Celebrate Oktoberfest This Fall in DC

What is Oktoberfest?

Oktoberfest is an annual celebration originating from Germany in 1810 held from around mid-September to early October. The festival started as a celebration of the prince of Bavaria’s marriage. This festival lasted five days and included a horse race, a state agriculture fair, and in later years booths serving food and drinks. Since the midst of Oktoberfest is here, make sure to attend some of the lively events happening around DC. There are various restaurants and bars hosting events as well as free festivals to attend. Oktoberfest Weekend at The Wharf

Celebrate Oktoberfest on the water at the Wharf from September 30th to October 2nd. Some of the various free events include the Wiener 500 Dachshund Dash to benefit and support the organization Rural Dog Rescue, dance lessons on the pier, a stein hoisting contest, and other activities with food and refreshments. The Annual Wunder Garten Oktoberfest Festival

Attend the 8th Annual Oktoberfest Festival which is going on now until October 9th. Located at the Wunder Garten, this German beer garden’s largest event features four weekends of German food, music, and drinks. Feel free to get dressed up for a discount too! Wunder Garten will also produce PRIDEtoberfest in partnership with the Capital Pride Alliance. The weekly schedule of events includes trivia on Mondays from 6pm – 9pm, Oktoberfest Beer Happy Hour from 6pm – 9pm on Tuesdays, musical trivia from 6pm – 9pm on Wednesdays, and PRIDEtoberfest October 6th 6:30pm to 10:30pm on some Thursdays. Frederick’s Oktoberfest at the Frederick Fairgrounds

On September 30th and October 1st, attend Frederick’s Oktoberfest festival. This is a long running festival in the DMV that celebrates German culture and the heritage of the county. With both fun and educational events, visitors can celebrate with music, food, and support local breweries located in the party tent. Tickets range from $6-$20 and and anyone wearing authentic Bavarian lederhosen or a dirndl can enter for free. Read more about the event on the Frederick Oktoberfest website.

Taste of Oktoberfest

As a part of DC’s International City Food Festival, the German Embassy invites visitors to get an an authentic taste of the legendary festivities, curated with the German-American Heritage Foundation and the German Embassy. If you’re in search of German food, beer, and music, be sure to stop by Franklin Park at 4pm on Friday, October 14th. Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased on the International City Food Festival’s website.
